Meknes & Volubilis, Morocco family travel and accessible travel

Why visit Meknes? Is it worth visiting with kids?

Father and son view a mosque from the streets of the Meknes Medina in Morocco

Just a few hours’ drive from Fes, the small city of Meknes intrigued us with its medina and its proximity to the Moroccan and Roman ruins area of Volubilis.

During our few nights in Meknes, we treated ourselves to beautiful, sumptuous lodging in a riad, or traditional formal home that now is like a guesthouse or bed-and-breakfast. The nearby medina gave us a chance to encounter folks living day-to-day life, complete with lovely local restaurants, welcoming cafe owners, and winding streets.

You can easily reach Meknes by rail from Tangier, or by bus or private vehicle from Fes. If coming from Fes, we suggest hiring a private driver and combining a drive with a visit to Volubilis.
