When our family of four visited Finland in July 2026, we were in Helsinki for 28 days. From the tang of salted licorice to salmon chowder, island forts to wood-fired sauna, we had so much fun—all the more so, because we could easily stay connected thanks to our Finland eSIM.
Why did we choose this eSIM?
Most of our international travels are 28-90 day stays in that country, depending on our plans and what the legal options are for a stay. For our eSIM needs, we don’t want to change SIMs constantly or worry about installing new ones. The 30-day, 5 GB eSIM is our workhorse. It’s plenty of time and data for what we need.
If we were staying longer than 30 days, we’d need to get a new eSIM under Airalo, but that’s usually quick and easy in the app.
Provider: Throughout destinations in Asia, Europe, and more, we’ve used Airalo eSIMs since 2022. We consider it an easy decision, and at this time have felt little need to cross-shop or comparison shop.

Our setup: We use Apple iPhones. Jodie and I have a US-based cellular plan for voice and text. We use our travel eSIMs only for data. Our teen doesn’t have a phone plan currently and just uses a data plan under your travel eSIM.

How to use less phone data when traveling
While there are unlimited data packages, they can be overpriced overkill for most travelers. We have yet to find an unlimited data package abroad that is the right fit for our needs. In fact, we’re often surprised at how little data we usually need when traveling.
Download map for offline use and let data load when out and about.
For mapping and navigation, we use Google Maps for navigation in Finland. On Wi-Fi, prior to arriving in Helsinki, we downloaded the Google Maps Helsinki area map for offline use. That way, we already have the location information on our phones. Plus, we use less data navigating when we’re out and about. Should we be offline, we still have access to the map.
Prioritize higher data needs for when we’re on Wi-Fi at our accommodation.
Things like social media, streaming videos, or downloading podcasts? We rarely do that when we’re out and about. Instead, we leverage the Wi-Fi at our accommodation for those more intensive data needs.
Check for free Wi-Fi when out and about.
The Helsinki city center, shopping centers, the airport, museums such as the Ateneum, and more locations throughout Helsinki offer free Wi-Fi. We usually try to get on that free connection first, before relying on our data.
Check your battery and recharge as needed before going out
Lately, I have to monitor my phone’s charge. Some of this has to do with needing to replace my phone battery, but a lot of it comes down to my dual eSIMs simply using charge more quickly.
If we’re going out for sightseeing and activities, I usually pop my phone on the charger, usually aiming to get the charge to at least 80%.
And yes, we could carry a portable charger. Sometimes we do. Often, it’s nice to have one less thing to bring along. Plus, often when we have carried a portable charger, we haven’t needed it. So I prefer to think ahead a little and top up my phone’s battery before we head out.
What to know from our personal experience
Using multiple eSIMs at the same time impacts battery life.
We have identified little in the way of patterns or consistent factors, though.
In Finland, we’ve seen less battery drain than we have in other destinations. Why? No idea. Maybe all the black licorice, fresh berries, and salmon soup boost cell signals.
Install your eSIM before you leave home, finish activation as soon as possible upon arrival.
As soon as our flight’s cabin crew gave permission for phones to wake up from airplane mode, I activated my Finland eSIM.
After I turned on data roaming for that eSIM, my phone was online within a few minutes. For the heck of it, I always restart my phone too.
Jodie’s Finland eSIM took longer this time around.
When you have multiple eSIMs, it’s easy to confuse the labels. We realized we’d mislabeled one of her eSIMs. Instead of activating her Finland eSIM, it turned out we were trying to activate one of her Japan ones. No big deal. The eSIM won’t do anything but make you question your choices. Once we changed to the correct eSIM, she was online within a few minutes.
If you can activate your eSIM on the plane, great. Otherwise, once you’re in the airport, get on free Wi-Fi if you can, and complete activation as you head toward immigration and customs. See if the process completes before you go through immigration. In our experience, as you get deeper into the airport, especially toward the immigration lanes, the signal can get pretty bad. That was our experience in Helsinki: once we had cleared immigration and were heading to baggage claim, Jodie’s phone signal improved, and her eSIM finished activating.
When in doubt, check data roaming settings and restart your phone.
If you’re having a hard time connecting, check your phone’s settings for data roaming. Anecdotally, in my experience, I also find that restarting my phone helps.
Would we get this Finland eSIM again?
Yes. Our Finland Airalo eSIM connection and speed have been excellent, and we consider the price a good value, especially across three devices.
