Morocco eSIM our family used for 6 weeks

Reliable, affordable mobile data throughout Tangier, Rabat, Fes and its Medina, Volubilis, Meknes

Easy choice: Morocco Airalo 30 day 5 GB eSIM

There we were, just after New Year, strolling along the dock to our ferry. Over the next hour and a half, we’d cross the Strait of Gibraltar from Tarifa, Spain, to Tangier, Morocco, to start 6 weeks visiting destinations across northern Morocco. Before we left our rental, though, there was one thing we did: buy and install our Morocco eSIM.

Immediate mobile data once we landed at Tangier

While we were in Europe, we relied on a Portugal eSIM and a Spain eSIM. Morocco would take us out of the European Union for a while, and it would be our first visit to a country in Africa. While the place was different, the connection was the same.

Once we crossed into Moroccan waters, we switched our phones from our Spain eSIM to our Morocco eSIM.

While I took our passports to the on-ship immigration officers for our entry stamp, our phones switched networks and activated our new eSIMs. By the time I went back for our passports, about ten minutes later, our phones were ready to keep us online throughout our time in Morocco, including as we disembarked at Tangier.

Why this Morocco eSIM

We’ve relied for years on eSIMs from Airalo. Looking over Airalo’s options for Morocco, we found we could pick the same 30-day, 5 GB workhorse that we usually pick. Since most of our visits to a country last at least a month, we’ve found the most reliable and easy choice to be the 30-day eSIMs.

Especially during our month-long stay in Fes, we knew we’d have some sightseeing days but also many days at our accommodation. We suspected we wouldn’t need as much data as we sometimes do.

Visit log

From newer parts of town to medieval walls cities, our Morocco eSIM kept us online with reliable data throughout our time in Northern Morocco, including:

  • Tangier (staying near the Medina)
  • Rabat (staying in the heart of the Medina)
  • Fes (staying in the Ville Nouvelle but often visiting the Medina)
  • Volubilis
  • Meknes
  • Tangier (staying in a new neighborhood on the eastern side of the city for convenient staging to catch a ferry to Italy)

Occasionally in the medina, there can be winding, narrow lanes where you might lose signal, but it was always brief. Then our phones connected again as soon as we came out onto less narrow, closed-in streets.

Practical tips

Usually, we go for a 30-day, 5 GB eSIM, but this time we didn’t. We went for a 3 GB eSIM, but that’s since been discontinued by Airalo. Now, if we were needing a Morocco eSIM again, we’d go with the Airalo 5 GB 30-day option.

Why did we get 3 GB at the time? We use Wi-Fi in our accommodation, so that cuts down our need for mobile data. Plus, we download the Google Maps data for that area for offline use, so we use less data while navigating.

Often we snag a 5 GB eSIM. However, this time we chose 3 GB to see if it would be a better (and cheaper choice). Now, though, we’d get the 5 GB and not think twice about it.

The call was a good one: We didn’t run out of data, and at the end of our 30 days, we topped up our data with a fresh load of beautiful gigabytes, to get us through our last couple of weeks, including more time in Fes, a visit to the historical ruins at Volubilis, a week in Meknes near the Medina, and a few more days in Tangier before taking a ferry from Morocco to Genoa, Italy.

Also helpful? We turned off cellular data use for data-hogging apps, such as Apple Podcasts, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and the New York Times (I do puzzles every day, such as Wordle and Connections). By keeping our data settings to what we knew were useful when we were on data, we didn’t have to worry about unnecessary apps using our data. Instead, we used those apps or data when we were on Wi-Fi at our accommodation.

An eSIM can keep you connected throughout Morocco

Airalo eSIMs have been a consistently straightforward choice for our family. After all, we’re busy parents and world travelers. We work hard on some decisions, but we need some decisions to be easy. For us, having Airalo as a go-to eSIM has made our lives easier—and our mobile phones are always online when we need them.
