About Mount Aso
While Mt. Fuji is the most iconic mountain in Japan, did you know that there’s a bigger, active volcano that’s easy to visit, even with kids?
In fact, you can drive all the way up to Nakadake Crater of Mt. Aso, or Aso-san (阿蘇山). Plus, visiting Mt. Aso is an ideal day trip from Kumamoto (くまもと / 熊本市).
Before you go
Mount Aso is an active volcano. While it’s open to the public, sometimes conditions are dangerous and the public areas have to be closed for safety.
As recently as 2021, there have been powerful eruptions. In fact, the volcano museum has some footage from a crater camera that captured sparks of flying lava… until the lava destroyed the camera.
While overall eruptions don’t happen a lot, they can.
On a day to day basis, steam and fumes from the crater can sometimes be toxic, or simply blowing too much in the wrong direction.
Before you go to Mount Aso, check the crater conditions website. It gives a daily update of conditions and restrictions, along with what’s open and closed.
And remember: Even if the crater overlook is closed, the museum and outdoor areas are also worth a visit.

How to get to Mt. Aso from Kumamoto
Train and buses to/from Mt. Aso: Possible but time-consuming
We originally planned to visit Mount Aso by bus and train. Trains run from Kumamoto to Aso Station (also the home of the Usopp One Piece statue). You can take buses to the crater area itself.
There’s just one thing.
Taking the train and bus takes a long, long time. When we looked into this in 2024, we were seeing trip times of around 3 hours to get from Kumamoto to the crater.
And that was just getting there.
It would also be around 3 hours back. Maybe more.
Technically, yes, you can take public transportation from Kumamoto to Mt. Aso.
If you were going to do that, we’d suggest you look at staying in Aso itself, and heading to the crater the following day.
Preferred: Rent a car
Kumamoto has many places where you can rent a car. Plus, car rentals and driving in Japan are generally pretty easy.
Instead of spending 3+ hours on public transportation, the drive from our central Kumamoto accommodation to the crater rim took about an hour and a half:
- It was much easier to explore the crater area at our own pace
- The museum, cafe, gift shop, observation decks, and outdoor trails are centered in one main area
- There’s a decent uphill choof to get to the parking lot at the crater rim overlook area, so driving was easier and faster than walking or taking the bus
- When driving, have cash on hand for the entrance fees to the crater rim overlook area
- From the parking lot at the crater rim overlook, head into the main visitor center building for the free stamp
- Head to the overlooks and enjoy looking into an active volcano!
You can also more easily explore more of the Aso area. After visiting the crater, we drove into Aso itself. While there we stopped at Aso Station to pose for photos with the statue of Usopp from the anime One Piece. Then we snagged some stamps from inside the train station itself.

Visiting Mt. Aso is an ideal day trip during your visit to Kumamoto
Our visit to Mt. Aso was a rare window of opportunity. Conditions allowed us to get all the way to the very rim of this hot, steaming, stinky crater, and it was worth every sniff.
But don’t worry if conditions keep you from getting to the Nakadake Crater overlook, especially if you only have one day to visit. There’s a lot more around Mt. Aso for you to check out, including helicopter tours, an excellent volcano museum, a gift shop, cafes, observation decks, and hiking trails.
Even if the crater overlook is closed, your visit can still be in business. And if you can visit the crater, it’s going to be a highlight of your trip to Kumamoto.
