Portugal eSIM our family used for a month in Porto and Lisbon

Consistent, no-headaches mobile data from the coast to the Douro Valley

Easy choice: Airalo Portugal 30 day 5 GB eSIM

When visiting Porto and Lisbon during a month in Portugal, we wanted to focus on food, port, and history—not our mobile data. Here’s what Jodie and I used for our Portugal eSIM:

Most of our time in Portugal was its second city of Porto. Whether wandering along the riverfront Ribeira, checking out the Castelo do Queijo on the coast, or day-tripping to the wine country of the Douro Valley, the last thing we wanted to worry about was having consistent data.

We’ve used Airalo eSIMs in many countries, and this was our first time using one in Europe. Wherever we were in Porto, or while sightseeing a few days in Lisbon, our 30 day 5 GB Airalo Portugal eSIM kept us seamlessly connected with mobile data.

That said, we use a US-based mobile carrier for our voice and text. We turn off that carrier’s data though, and instead used our Airalo eSIM for mobile data in Portugal.

Using two eSIMs at once works fine from a functionality standpoint. But it means that our phone batteries drain a little faster throughout the day. That’s not usually a big deal. When needed, we’d top up our phone batteries before sightseeing, or we’d stash a power bank and cables in Jodie’s purse or my daypack.

Why this Portugal eSIM

As much as we shop around and compare different products and services, we also don’t need the decision fatigue of starting from square one every time we want to get a new eSIM for our phones when we travel abroad.

We’ve been using Airalo eSIMs since 2022. The service has been consistent, with good data speeds and easy installation.

Since we usually stay around a month in a destination, experience has taught us that a 5 GB eSIM is usually our sweet spot.

We also spend plenty of time in our accommodation, for example, so we use our rental or hotel’s Wi-Fi a lot. When we’re out and about, we also turn off cellular data for data-hungry apps such as social media, podcasts, or video. That way, we’re mostly using our phone data for messaging on WhatsApp, navigating with Google Maps, or ordering a rideshare through Bolt.

Airalo’s Portugal eSIM is an affordable, reliable choice

We strongly believe in keeping decisions simple. After all, as busy parents and world travelers, the last thing we want to do—or have time and energy to do—is micromanage decisions. Airalo’s eSIMs have been consistently easy to install, fast to use, and reliable wherever we are in the world. We’d gladly use an Airalo Portugal eSIM again on a future trip to Portugal.
